So water was discovered on Mars. This brings to mind two questions: 1. Is there life on Mars? and; 2. Can humans colonize it?
If the former question's answer is in the affirmative, and upon the existence of the necessary technology, we all know how this shit will go down:
First, humans will assess from afar the natural resources on Mars (Isn't this why we sent Curiosity up there?). In case such resources exist, humans will cultivate a narrative of the savage aliens which must be civilized. We will go in, murder millions of aliens in the name of spreading democracy, human (Alien?!) rights and maybe religion (because 'morality' is important). The aliens will probably fight back, and then we will invoke some sort of preemptive self defense doctrine (Yay Bush!!!) to justify the use of nuclear weapons on the new and shiny planet to police it and save our children (think of the children!). Of course, the main legal argument will be that International Law, particularly humanitarian law, norms do not apply to these intergalactic conflicts since they were not envisioned at the time of formation or since these alien creatures are not, and were not intended to be, the subjects of their protective power.
Once Mars is ready to be settled by non-militant humans, the first spaceship that will transfer thousands of them to the new colony (dare I say the new world?!), will be hit by an asteroid, creating the ultimate storyline for the next blockbuster - "Titanic: Lost in Space". Someone will be drawn naked while floating.
Alternatively, we will lose that war, and get our asses handed to us by the advanced alien species inhabiting Mars, who will come over to civilize us.
Either way, a great Hollywood feature will come out of it and the human race will unite against this newfound shared enemy. This is how, ladies and gentlemen, peace will be achieved on Planet Earth.
